[6 y/o client telling me about how her sister went to the dentist]
Me: Did you go to the dentist, too?
Client: No, because look — [shows me her teeth]
Me: Oh, very nice teeth! How are mine? [I show her my teeth]
Client: [slowly] Really, really, really, really, pretty.
5 y/o boy: (looking downtrodden) Today I’m sad again.
Me: (genuinely concerned) I’m sorry, what happened?
Boy: You know watermelon juice? I wanted it at school. But they ran out.
[Conversation with an 11 y/o client]
Client: I’m going to move to Hawaii soon.
Client: (pouty) I don’t want to live on an island.
Me: Why not?
Client: Too salty.
Client: And then we get to go home!
Client: Well, I get to go home. You stay here.
Client: Because you work here.
Client: And you live here.
Me: Who rides in a police car?
[Meeting a client for our first session together]
Me: It’s nice to meet you!
Client’s Mom: What do you say?
Client: I love you.
Me: Bears live in the woods. They like to eat honey. Where do bears live?
Client: In the hoods!
